Dan Seals for Congress - Candidate Free Time on PBS

The public television station in Chicago, WTTW Channel 11, airs Candidate Free Time, which is a series of unedited video clips supplied by the candidates. If you want to see a short clip of Dan describing why he's running for Congress, and how electing him will help change the direction currently pursued by the Bush administration, click on his picture.

It's not too late to contribute to Dan's campaign. Every contribution will help to ensure his television and radio ads are on the air through election day on November 7.

Dan Seals for Congress - 1 week to go

Only 1 week to go until election day. A few days ago, Republican incumbent Mark Kirk and Democratic challenger Dan Seals had their one and only scheduled debate at Adlai Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. If there were any doubts that the race in the 10th congressional district of Illinois is tight, just listen to the audience response to the candidates' closing statements, which you can view here.

It's still not too late to support Dan. Please forward this post to your friends and family in the States. Contributing to Dan's campaign will help ensure that his television and radio ads will continue to play through election day. Let's hope that the changes we need in Washington start on November 7.

Dan Seals on MSNBC Decision 2006

With less than two weeks until election day, the race for the 10th Congressional District of Illinois is heating up. A recent poll (click on Illinois 10), has Dan is in a statistical dead heat with the incumbent Republican Congressman Mark Kirk. When Dan first launched his campaign, most people said the 10th was 'safe Republican'. All of that has changed, and now the race is even grabbing the attention of people outside of the northern suburbs of Chicago:

If you're interested in supporting Dan's campaign, it's not too late. Financial contributions during the final push to election day will help keep his ads on the air. Forward this link to your family and friends. Spread the word. Let's hope that the change in leadership in Washington will begin on November 7.

Dan Seals for Congress

The United States general elections will be held on November 7. One-third of the seats in the US Senate, and all of the 435 seats in the US House of Representatives, are up for election. One of the seats in the House is being contested by an old high school friend of mine, Dan Seals. At the end of August, I had post asking for support for Dan's campaign.

As a newcomer to the political scene, Dan wasn't given much of a chance at unseating an incumbent running for his third consecutive term. All of that has changed, and according to a recent poll (click on Illinois 10), Dan is in a statistical dead heat with the incumbent Mark Kirk. The local ABC affiliate in Chicago is now calling the 10th one of the "key races" in Illinois.

I'm asking again for your support for Dan. The best way to support Dan is with a financial contribution. Forward this link to your family and friends. Spread the word. The money will be used to keep ads like the one below on the air until election day.

A change of leadership in Congress means we can start repairing some of the damage the current administration has caused over the last 6 years.

Restaurant of the week

It's been a while since I've had one of these - certainly more than a week! Anyway, this one was worth the wait.

momofuku noodle bar
163 1st Avenue
New York, NY 10003

When my friend 'young Jay' told me he was coming to the city with a couple of friends to visit, I was very excited. Jay has lived in New Haven (a short train from New York City) for the last 4 years or so, and while I was in London I kept hearing about all of his trips to Manhattan, so I figured I could just sit back and let someone show me around. I turned out to be right, although it was Jay's friend Robbie that picked out the venue for dinner. For those of you back in the UK who think 'wagamama' when you think of a noodle bar, think again. momofuku, which means 'lucky peach', is to wagamama what Oregano is to Pizza Express. The ingredients at momofuku are fresh, and other than the almost complete lack of vegetarian options (the only one is the 'Ginger Scallion', which doesn't have any broth) this place has enough diversity to please anyone. The 'Tsukemen' - dipping broth, chilled noodles, shredded Berkshire pork, and poached egg - was amazing. The atmosphere, like the dishes, is simple, with basically one long counter so that the majority of the customers are facing the open kitchen. The only thing I would change in momofuku is the size... there's always a wait for a seat. Don't come with a big group.

Making the President squirm

For those of you who are fans of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, you'll probably have already seen this. Stephen Colbert was the 'White House Correspondent' for The Daily Show, and earlier this year he gave a speech at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Absolutely hilarious. I'm guessing somebody lost their job after dinner...

Just in case?

This story caught my eye.

A 'no-fly' list that includes dead people and Saddam Hussein? What are the odds that any of them will be on my next flight?

The city of brotherly love

Will be in Philadelphia this weekend to visit some friends, and to go to a symposium at the University of Pennsylvania (not to be confused with Penn State) on Monday. I still have a lot of friends from grad school in Philadelphia, and am looking forward to catching up with some of them on this trip. Since it's only a Chinatown Bus ride away, I hope I can visit more often than I was able to while living in London.

Incidentally, I'm staying in Center City on Sunday, and will probably try to talk Ralph into going for a beer at Dirty Frank's, so if you're in town, why not drop by and say hi?

Otherwise, I'll see you the next time I'm in Philly!

Feeling a bit bored?

Why not try to see how many t-shirts you can wear at the same time?

Voila Voila!

The latest visitors to Chateau Jaffe were Ludo and Julie, two French friends from London. Had a great week catching up with them, as well as Jo and Annette (two other visitors from London who stayed in slightly more upscale accommodation). The night before Ludo and Julie left we went to my first music concert here in Manhattan. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is a band from New York, which Ludo told me about while we were working together in London. They played at Rumsey Field in Central Park, home to the annual Summer Stage. Takka Takka and Architecture in Helsinki opened for them. I liked the show, but have to say that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah wasn't as good a live act as I had hoped... maybe that will change.

Having some problems embedding Youtube clips here at the moment, but in the meantime you can see a clip from a Clap Your Hands performance in France here.
